Tim Rice
Consultant: STEAM, Technology, & Robotics
Tim has served in a variety of teaching, coaching, and administrative roles over his 29 year career in education. Currently serving as the Design and Fabrication Lab (DeFL) Director and the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programming coordinator at Kentucky Country Day School (KCD) in Louisville, KY. Tim teaches design and fabrication classes to high school students, programming and robotics to middle school students, and coordinates global travel programs. Tim is the varsity head coach for both the competitive Vex robotics and men's golf teams. As Information Technology Director (2003-2015), Tim led numerous initiatives including the 1:1 upper school laptop program, 1:1 middle school Chromebook program, 1:1 classroom iPads in the lower school, the development and implementation of the first school-based maker space (DeFL) in Louisville, and provided the first MakerCorps site in the state of Kentucky. Tim has served on several Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) accreditation teams, partnered with Louisville’s Sister Cities program to lead student trips to Tamale, Ghana, and spearheaded KCD’s Tech, Teach, Learn (TTL) annual conference. From 2013 to 2023 TTL offered free instructional technology professional development sessions to a wide range of public and private school faculty from across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.
Before arriving at KCD, Tim worked as a classroom teacher and technology coordinator in the Detroit Public Schools for seven years. Tim is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (1990-1992), having served in both the Philippines and Paraguay and a graduate of both Michigan State University (BA) and Wayne State University (MAT). Tim received the 1996 Wayne State University Graduate Professional Scholarship, 1998 Booker T. Washington Educator Achievement award, the 2003 Spirit of Detroit award, the 2003 Communities in Schools Outstanding Educator award, the 2014 Louisville’s People to Know in Technology/Innovation, and the 2023 KCD Eric Davis Memorial Faculty Award.
Tim has been married to his wife, Lisa for 31 amazing years and has 3 kind children, all of whom graduated from KCD.
